The first German expressionist film I ever saw, in about 1971, was "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," produced in 1920. It takes place in an asylum, where a mad psychiatrist undertakes to see if he can get a somnambulist, a hypnotic sleepwalker, to do anything he tells him to do, including murder. One of the characters in this movie is another asylum patient, Jane. I asked my model, Mary Seager, to take on poses as if she imagined she were the insane Jane, and she went right to work. Mary never saw the movie or images of Jane. Her job was to look as crazy as she could. So this piece is a collage of Mary, as Jane, in "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari."
